A Pan-European Initiative to Tackle the Obesity Challenge

The rising prevalence of obesity has become one of the global challenges, placing an increasing burden on both individuals and society as a whole, calling for sustained and coordinated action across Europe.

Addressing obesity as a multifactorial disease requires systemic and multidisciplinary approaches that reflect its complexity across diverse populations, life stages, and settings, including institutional and policy-level actions.

A new publication introduces the European Cluster of Obesity Research (OBEClust), a pan-European initiative designed to harmonise obesity prevention research and policy.

By bringing together nine EU-funded projects, OBEClust strengthens collaboration across different disciplines, sectors and countries, improving understanding of obesity. From childhood obesity and personalised care to environmental and behavioural factors that contribute to its development, each project studies different aspects of obesity, helping to address knowledge gaps and support more effective obesity management.

OBEClust activities align with broader European and international priorities in obesity prevention, including addressing obesogenic environments, reducing health inequalities, supporting life-course approaches, and improving the translation of evidence into practice.
